Why is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) one of the most effective martial arts in the world ? The simple answer is constant refinement in a chaotic open platform. The Gracie family refined and tested their art in Brazil in a by fighting in Vale Tudo ( are full-contact unarmed combat events, with a limited number of rules, that became popular in Brazil during the 20th century), a forerunner of modern day Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
What became apparent over time was that having a firm understanding of the actual application of a set of controlled techniques through live training and real fights was superior to having a quiver filled with techniques that were powerful in theory but could not be tried and refined until an actual fight occurred.
