Teach them standing arm triangle to takedown as well as armdrag to RNC then takedown
security I’ve used bodylock takedowns, standing head and arm chokes(sidearm away from the aggressor’s free arm), and taking the back without being on the bottom.
My most effective technique was a push/pull on the shoulders as I circled behind to take the back. From there, I like to get under both arms and secure 1 arm with both of my hands(head behind shoulder of trapped arm). I like this position a lot bc I have enough control to get compliance or trip the guy on his face if he still wants to be an ass (sometimes they try to elbow with the free arm hence the head placement mentioned above).

I’m a cop (no bashing please) and there are a few techniques i use all the time. Arm drag into a Straight arm bar takedown into a knee on shoulder (they are face down) isolating the arm for a single cuff. RNC from standing or arm triangle with a subsequent ‘safe’ takedown is also awesome. Just keep in mind that damaging the detained person too much is not a good thing, control really is. What I will say is detaining guys who were going nuts has got a he’ll of a lot easier since starting BJJ! Phone Post

I’m a brown belt and former military and corrections/police officer. I agree with Gerbil-KoB is great with the gift wrap. I used standing arm triangle with takedown a lot and RNC not so much.

RNC is hand down the best technique for subduing subjects seriously under the effects of intoxicants. Obviously you have to have some experience, but when they start to fade just release and manipulate into restraints. It’s not taught in training because of risk but I could justify using it in a court of law easily because with control it does absolutely no damage to the detained person. Love it. Phone Post

Unfortunately, a lot of states and depts don’t allow the RNC. In Indiana, they only allow the Uni Lateral Vascular Neck Restraint (aka, the arm triangle). No chokes, unless it’s a deadly force situation (you have to be justified in drawing your gun and shooting them dead to RNC).
The stuff I’ve been working with LEO’s on, the arm triangle with takedowns, guard work (sweeps and how to take the back), pinning from top positions and how to monitor the subjects arms to make sure they’re not going for a weapon while they’re engaging. Some standing arm and wrist locks from the escort and cuffing positions. Basic strikes are also taught, but they’re also gimped by dept/state policies (nothing to the head unless deadly force, etc).

I have an affiliate BJJ school here in Az. Although small, its one of the busiest counties for illegal immigrants to pass through here. Most of my students are Border Patrol agents and last week one of my students was on the job and one of the illegals went for his gun. Im glad i took the time to show him and the other BP Agents the armdrag from standing! I totally agree with the kob, head n arm, and gift wrap techniques! TTT Phone Post

I’m no black belt, but working as a bouncer I’m partial to arm drags, the Russian 2 on 1 in various forms (I particularly like an obscure standing figure four biceps slicer that I learned from some Greco guys I work with – it feels like the forearm will snap, usually gets people’s attention), RNC for the guys who go apeshit, knee on belly and shoulder of justice for controlling spazzes on the ground, any kind of bearhug takedown, any kind of giftwrap to turn people over for cuffing.
As for guard techniques, I’ve always thought that the omoplata would be one of the most practical techniques to teach someone from the bottom for self defense. It gets you from bottom to top while applying a submission, immobilizes the attacked arm and gets you away from the other arm in case of a weapon, and is one of the simplest attacks from feet on hips/shins in biceps, which is a great base for defending strikes. It also places the opponent belly-down for strikes, RNC, handcuffing etc.
Osoto gari takedown to knee on belly was bread and better
Also, if you cant get arm wrap transition to knee on neck with pant control…when arms come up grab wrist in a sankyu fashion and get them to stomach and then knee on back.
Knee on belly, double wristlock, harness RNC, all covered on ISR Matrix.
Also it is good for them to know how to control someone of off their back, stand to base and simple sweeps. Anyone who has seen the footage of the female officer being mounted and the officer who did use the guard to save his life know what I mean.
