Check out this cool story about dedication, discipline & focus.
…. He was a scrawny little pencil neck that always had an excuse as to why he couldn’t roll, or couldn’t do part of the warm ups. He would just sit to the side, watching the class and doing silly little PT (Physical Therapy) exercises with a rubber band while the rest of us sweated. I watched him do this for a year and a half. Then one day, we had an in-house Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament, and this kid announced he was finally healthy to roll competitively. That’s when the weirdness started – he won the whole thing, beating everyone, including all the Billy Badass bodybuilder types twice his size.
I was absolutely shocked. I finally took the time to talk to the kid, and discovered he had legitimately been battling a series of serious injuries, and had kept re-injuring himself by jumping in too early (because he was so psychoticly motivated), and eventually our (very wise) coaching staff had forced him to take it easy until he was healthy enough to roll. For a year and a half, this kid was simply drilling technique and mentally rehearsing his game (while working a rubber band), and when the time came, he trounced all the guys that were putting in the physical sweat, but failing to engage their minds to learn the “real jiu jitsu”.
Since then, the kid has been either winning his division, or placing in the division above his.
That day, I learned an important lesson about the power of dedication, discipline, and mental focus.
He didn’t miss a day of training, and did everything he was physically capable of doing (and sometimes more). It’s much harder to make yourself learn a technique if you’re physically unable to roll.
