Mr. Phu took the time to explain to me a proper exercise regimen including breaking down my training time into segments of when I should ‘peak’ and how can maximize our training for the race.
He explained by having several peaks, instead of training harder and harder the weeks prior to the event, would actually be more beneficial.
During the 3 months prior to the event, Mr. Phu trained me with various activities that targeted either my cardiovascular endurance and strength or my muscular strength.
For example, he set up cones in a parking lot where we did running patterns including touching the cone at each point,
we did exercises with stability bands to strengthen the core muscles, and step exercises, always aiming for a higher number of repetitions in the given time. He also discussed the importance of mental endurance, so that in the middle of the race when you are tired you can convince yourself that you still have plenty of energy and strength to finish. Nutrition was also an important part of the training, including replenishing after each training session with certain foods. I gained so much knowledge about exercising in those 3 months that I am motivated to start training as soon as possible for next year’s event!
Mr. Phu always did the exercises with me – I never felt like he asking me to do something he couldn’t do himself. Because of his training, I finished the 26 mile race in a little over 2 hours.
