On Sunday, October 17, 2010, the 27th New York Open Judo Championship will be held in New York City at Hunter College. The New York Open Judo Championship is regarded as one of the premier judo tournaments in the United States, attracting some of the best Judoka from around the world.

This competition is considered to be the strongest Judo event in the Pan American Union and has Olympic track status.

“Once again we look forward to welcoming athletes from over 20 countries, such as Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Great Britain, Haiti, Israel, Japan, Mongolia, Morocco, Peru, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Spain, Ukraine, USA and Uzbekistan,” said Tournament Director Dr. Mel Appelbaum, “and we look forward to an outstanding event as athletes from all over the world compete to become a New York Open Champion.”

Competitions are held in seven different weight classes: 132, 145, 161, 178, 198, 220, and 220+ lbs. First-place winners in each weight class receive prize money of $1,000.

The event is a World and Olympic point competition where athletes can accumulate points to improve their world ranking. This is an international “B” level event for men and is sanctioned by USA Judo.

“The New York Open has achieved the rating of an International ‘B’ elite athlete event, which is the second highest rating in the world for a Judo Championship,” said Dr. Appelbaum.

The 2010 New York Open Judo Championship will take place at Hunter College, Hunter College, located at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue, West Building, B3 Level

Spectators are welcome. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door.

The tournament action begins at 8am, with the finals scheduled to start around 5pm.
